UPDATED: Apple iPad Used to Wirelessly Control Presonus Studiolive Audio Mixer

In a previous blog post I talked about some of the future uses of the iPad that I envisioned for churches. One of the possibilities I mentioned was the ability to control an audio mixer remotely using the touch display of the Apple iPad. I wanted to share with you guys how this has already become a reality with the Presonus StudioLive 16.4.2 and the StudioLive 24.4.2 mixer. I was already a huge fan of the StudioLive, now I'm just amazed. What I'm really excited about is that according to Rick Naqvi on the Presonus forums, Presonus is currently developing an iPad specific application that will better take advantage of the screen size and multi-touch display. I can see some portable churches deciding to ditch an audio snake and just leave the mixer right up on stage and mix on their iPad over wifi.

VIDEO UPDATE: Presonus just came out with a brand new video demonstrating using the Apple iPad to control the StudioLive mixer. They even show you how to do it without using a separate wifi router, just your iPad and a Macbook.

How to use Audacity to make your MP3 sermon podcasts sound professional

In this 2 part video tutorial I'll show you how to make your church's sermon audio recordings sound great.

I'll show you how to:

Set up Audacity's visual workspace

Trim the sermon start and end points
Amplify the recorded audio
Compress the audio for consistent volume levels
Remove noise like hisses and hums
Convert and systematically archive using iTunes

Great tutorial, Derrick! Thanks so much for posting this.
I'm curious - why not simply export the sermon out of Audacity as an mp3 file? I suppose iTune makes it easier to add name, artist, album data, but that seems like an extra step.

You are right, if you install an additional plugin for Audacity you can just export the MP3 there. I use iTunes for a couple of reasons. 1. The MP3 encoder for Audacity isn't (or at least wasn't) very easy to install. 2. The main reason is that iTunes is a great place for people to archive their sermons in an organized way. That way if they ever have server crash or change website companies they have a backup of all of their sermons already organized. This is just my preference, not the only right way to do it.

God bless you, Derrick! You explained the Audacity Compressor process better than anyone I have Googled during the last couple of hours. None of them mentioned the numbers on the side of the audio. Saying this made the Compressor options make sense. Billy
Grooms was correct mentioning the Audacity mp3 export option, but I have found the sound quality reduce considerably when I have used Audacity to convert to mp3. It is better to use another program for this step. I am a PC person and don't have iTunes on my
computer. I did download it a while back, but it created havoc, and my PC had horrendous crashes. I am still finding bits of iTunes throughout my PC. It is a nightmare to remove everything. Back to your tutorial ... I am a trainer myself and train trainers.
I must say you did a brilliant job with this tutorial. I have wasted hours, and wish I found you earlier. I always tell trainers I am training, NEVER to assume knowledge. The people who know that step already happily feel smart, and those who don’t, learn.

One other thing I would have appreciated is perhaps a pdf of the Steps. I had to replay the audios again and type notes. Video files are rather large to download, so I don't like to keep having to return and replaying them for reference. I have your notes
now to refer to - luckily you speak slowly, and I type quickly. Something I noticed while playing around with a sample audio and your instructions, my audio was higher than yours so the rate was between 24 and 36. I have no idea why as the microphone is about
12" away and I don't talk loudly. This threw me a bit. Add to that the fact that I am experimenting with the microphone in a box I have just walled with carpet to improve sound quality, and I am having a very 'interesting' time! It sounds like I recorded in
a tunnel. Oh well ... back to the drawing board. All this tells us is that we need good folk like you to look after our recording needs for us. I hope my comments will help others. God bless! ~ Tina
